“Why Think Tanks Matter?” event

On January 31, 2019, “Legal Analysis and Research” Public Union plans to hold a Round Table in Baku within the “Why Think Tanks Matter” series of events for civil society organizations to be held in parallel in about 200 countries within the Think Tanks and Civil Society Program implemented by the US Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies of the University of Pennsylvania.

The aim of the event is to provide information to the representatives of the civil society organizations regarding the importance of the institutions called think tanks in the contemporary period and their main functions and to exchange views on the current situation and future perspectives of the research-oriented organizations in Azerbaijan. Besides, the presentation of the Global Think Tank Index 2018 prepared by the Think Tanks and Civil Society Program will be given.

 

 

Developing Restorative Justice in law, policy and practice: Learning from around the world

Restorative justice is a practice in which the person(s) who were harmed by a crime, and those who were responsible for that harm, are brought into communication. In this article, Dr. Ian Marder discusses the implementation of restorative justice in some key jurisdictions, focusing on their legislation, policies and models of service provision.

 Press Statement by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs

The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group (Igor Popov of the Russian Federation, Stéphane Visconti of France and Andrew Schofer of the United States of America) hosted consultations between Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov and Acting Foreign Minister of Armenia Zohrab Mnatsakanyan on 16 January in Paris. The Co-Chairs met separately and then jointly with the Ministers. Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Andrzej Kasprzyk also participated in these meetings. This was the fourth meeting of the two Ministers.

The Ministers discussed a wide range of issues related to the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and agreed upon the necessity of taking concrete measures to prepare the populations for peace.’

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev initiated improvement of reforms in public administration sphere

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on additional measures to improve public administration in the country on Jan. 14.

According to the decree, the activity of the Science Development Foundation and the Baku International Multiculturalism Center will be reorganized based on the self-financing principle.

The State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources, the Knowledge Foundation and the Center for Strategic Studies are being liquidated.

The Secretariat of the Interdepartmental Commission for Protection of State Secret, the Working Group of the Azerbaijan State Commission for Combating Narcotics and Illegal Drug Circulation, the Working Group of the Azerbaijan State Commission on Affairs of Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing People, the Secretariat of the Tariff Council are being also liquidated to reorganize their activity on a voluntary basis.

The European Union and the United Nations in Global Governance UNU-CRIS Summer School, Bruges, Belgium, June 17-28, 2019

Taking place in Bruges, Belgium, the UNU-CRIS Summer School will take advantage of its central location and close proximity to numerous sites of historical and contemporary significance, including a visit to Flanders Fields (World War I battlefield) around Ypres and a three-day excursion to Brussels, where the group will visit institutions and organizations such as the UN House, the European External Action Service, the European Parliament and the European Commission. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the final deadline: 31 March 2019

Applications for an ‘Excellence Scholarship’ close on 28 February 2019 (see below for further information).

UNU-CRIS strongly suggests students applying from countries requiring a visa to travel to the EU apply before 28 February 2019, to allow sufficient time for the visa application procedure. UNU-CRIS can provide a letter of acceptance to assist in the visa application, but this process is the responsibility of the applicant.
